Missionvale
"Poverty is not natural...and overcoming it is not a gesture of charity - it is an act of justice." Nelson MandelaMissionvale is an extremely poor shackland township in Nelson Mandela Metropole (Port Elizabeth) South Africa. 70% of the population are unemployed, 60% are infected with HIV / AIDS and a large number of children have been orphaned due to AIDS. There is no electricity and only 16 taps to service an estimated 130,000 people. Life is a constant battle against disease and hunger.

Missionvale Vision
To improve the life of the people of Missionvale, through love, consultation, participation and self development. The Charitable Nun
In 1988 Sister Ethel Normoyle, an Irish nun, established the Missionvale Care Centre. The centre comprises a health clinic, a nutrition centre, a self help training centre, a clothing warehouse and distribution outlet, a school and a church. It has become a vital lifeline for Missionvale’s severely deprived people. Both Mother Theresa and Queen Elizabeth have visited the centre, a tribute to Sister Ethel’s wonderful work. The centre is almost entirely funded by donations with minimal Government support. The nutrition centre provides soup mix and bread to the most needy families. Each person is required to bring recycling material in exchange for food.
The Missionvale Care Centre comprises:
- A school with pre-primary and primary classes, educating 160 children
- A health clinic, which in 2005 saw 12,920 TB patients, 5,947 babies and children under 5 and 37,802 adults
- A church used to bury the dead - on average 20 per weekend
- An HIV / AIDS programme:
- Counsellors for HIV/AIDS affected people and families
- Food parcels (in 2005, 22,789 food parcels were given to families affected by HIV/AIDS)
- A detox, nutrition and vitamin therapy programme for HIV/AIDS sufferers
- Nutrition centre caring for 900 heads of families (in 2005, 127,308 cups of dried soup and half loaves of bread were provided)
- Self help projects on literacy, sewing, wood working and vegetable gardens
- A successful community garden

A Million Mothers
Post-Tsunami, post-terrorism, Bali’s culture and economy have suffered considerably. In poorer families, women cannot afford to go to hospital for birthing. Maternal mortality rates are climbing.
In Bali, if you give birth in hospital and can’t pay the bill, they keep the baby until you can. If there are complications, as there often are, family members must sell land, houses and hock everything they can, taking on a cycle of debt they will never resolve.
'A Million Mothers’ are being called to donate $1 each to build a new Balinese birth clinic. And you could be one of those mums.
Yayasan Bumi Sehat is a Bali-based non-profit organisation that provides pre-natal, midwifery and post natal clinic for mothers in need in Bali and Aceh. Jan Cornall, a member of the MiLK team, has been visiting and volunteering in Bali for some time now.
