A Million Mothers
Post-Tsunami, post-terrorism, Bali’s culture and economy have suffered considerably. In poorer families, women cannot afford to go to hospital for birthing. Maternal mortality rates are climbing.
In Bali, if you give birth in hospital and can’t pay the bill, they keep the baby until you can. If there are complications, as there often are, family members must sell land, houses and hock everything they can, taking on a cycle of debt they will never resolve.
'A Million Mothers’ are being called to donate $1 each to build a new Balinese birth clinic. And you could be one of those mums.
Yayasan Bumi Sehat is a Bali-based non-profit organisation that provides pre-natal, midwifery and post natal clinic for mothers in need in Bali and Aceh. Jan Cornall, a member of the MiLK team, has been visiting and volunteering in Bali for some time now.
